Why we use Obagi products – A personal message from Maria Phillips, Director and Lead Aesthetics Practitioner at Bank Aesthetics.

A number of years ago, I discovered a company called Obagi. Obagi specialises in cosmeceutical skin health products, which Obagi Blue Peelmeans their products are created using prescription-strength formulations and are available only through medically trained and approved suppliers. Their medical credentials immediately sparked my interest as for a long time I had been questioning the effectiveness of many beauty skin care product ranges we are surrounded by on a day to day basis.

Seven years ago I started using Obagi products and I haven’t looked back. When I opened the clinic in 2013, I couldn’t wait to start stocking the products myself so I could pass on the wonderful results to my clients.

Obagi has a clinically proven track record of over 50 years demonstrating how their products improve skin health.

I have only been treating patients for a relatively short time with Obagi products, but already I have seen some amazing results.

Obagi promotes prevention rather than cure; they don’t employ any gimmicky marketing tactics or waste money on expensive packaging. What you see is what you get and it works.

The products feel luxurious on your skin and because such a tiny amount is needed in each applications, your products last a while and provide real value for money.

3 Reasons Why You shouldn’t be Using Moisturiser

1.    A vicious circleFine Lines and Wrinkles
By applying moisturiser to your skin every day, your skin gets trapped in a vicious circle. We have been conditioned to use a moisturiser and it’s a hard habit to break. If you do suffer from dry skin, applying a moisturiser offers you instant relief.  So you may ask, how can it be doing me any harm?

2.    It confuses your skin
Applying moisturiser to your skin confuses it into thinking your skin is hydrated and so its natural regeneration functionality stops from the deep dermis where all your natural oils and water are produced.

3.    It doesn’t protect you from the sun
To fully protect your skin from the skin you need to use products with SPF 30 or higher and make sure it protects you from both UVA and UVB rays.

At the Bank Aesthetics Clinic we advocate the use of cosmeceutical products, such as Obagi Medical, which have been clinically proven to improve skin health by working at a cellular level.

If you would like to find out what you can be doing to improve your skin health, then please book in for one of our FREE skin health consultations. Call us today on 01926 859988.

Our frequently asked questions about Botox®

What is Botox ®? fine lines

BOTOX® (onabotulinumtoxinA) is a type of medicine that is used to treat patients with certain neuromuscular conditions. One of the most researched medicines in the world, BOTOX® can be used in the treatment of:

  • Cervical dystonia – head tilting, neck pain, and neck muscle spasms
  • Blepharospasm – or abnormal eyelid spasms (eye twitching)
  • Strabismus – also called crossed eyes
  • Symptoms of sever underarm sweating – when topical medicines don’t work well enough
  • Muscle stiffness in the elbow, wrist, and finger muscles associated with upper limb spasticity
  • Headaches associated with chronic migraine

Q: How does Botox work?

A: Botox works by weakening the muscles into which it is injected. As facial muscles contract, the loose skin above those muscles wrinkle. By weakening the muscles, the wrinkles are reduced creating smoother looking skin.

Q: How long do results last?

A: The effects of Botox can last for three to four months but this depends on the individual’s skin type.

Q: How safe are wrinkle-relaxing injections? How often should you get Botox after your first injection? How many times can you have Botox?

A: Botox is very safe when injected by an expert such as Maria Phillips at the Bank Aesthetics Clinic in Kenilworth. As soon as your wrinkles return, you can have Botox again. There is no defined limit to the number of injections one can have. However, the body’s immune system is capable of developing antibodies to the Botox molecule which can make it ineffective at some point in the future.

Q: How many Botox treatments are needed before I see the results?

A: When injected correctly for your skin type, the results will be seen after the first treatment. Botox takes two to four days before the muscle weakening effect takes place. The maximum effect occurs at about 10 to 14 days. The effect can then last for three to four months.

Q: Is it true that Botox can stop excessive perspiration on the palms and feet. Is this safe and are there any side effects?

A: Yes, Botox has been successfully used to reduce excessive perspiration (hyperhidrosis) on the palms and feet. The side effects are related to the number of muscles that are injected.

Q: Can you have Botox in a number of places at the same time, ie, both forehead lines and crow’s feet?

A: Yes, Botox is frequently given in multiple sites at the same time to provide maximum impact.

Q: Which areas of the face can you get Botox?

A: The most common areas of the face that are injected with Botox are the frown lines between the eyebrows, the forehead wrinkles and the crow’s feet.

If you have any further queries or questions about Botox® please get in touch with Bank Aesthetics and we will be happy to answer your questions.

Tips on how to look after your skin in the winter sun

winter sunDo you have holidays planned this winter? Read our top tips on how to look after your skin in the WINTER SUN!
We are told by experts on the one hand to use sun cream factor 15+ whenever we are outside to protect our skin, yet on the other hand to get the right amount of Vitamin D, necessary for strong bones we need to expose our skin to sunlight.
So what is the answer?
The ‘SunSmart’ stay sage in the sun messages are:

  • Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm.
  • Make sure you never burn.
  • Aim to cover up with a T-shirt, hat and sunglasses.
  • Remember to take extra care with children.
  • Use at least a factor 15+ sunscreen.

The vitamin D message

Our body creates most of our vitamin D from direct sunlight on our skin. Short daily periods of sun exposure without sunscreen during the summer months (April to October) will help boost your vitamin D intake. A short period in the sun means a matter of minutes – about 10 to 15 minutes for most people – and is less than the time it takes you to start going red or to burn. The larger the area of your skin that is exposed to sunlight, the more chance there is of making enough vitamin D before you start to burn.

In the UK, our skin isn’t able to make vitamin D from winter sunlight (November to March) as the sunlight hasn’t got enough UVB (ultraviolet B) radiation. During the winter, we get vitamin D from our body’s stores and from food sources.
Our advice – Everything in moderation.

If you are enjoying Winter Sun this year, whether it’s a crisp walk over Christmas, or on the ski slopes or a tropical beach, use your common sense. Make sure you use the right skin protection and don’t spend too much time in the sun.

We recommend the Obagi Sun Shield Matte Broad Spectrum SPF 50. This sunscreen provides a high level of protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays. This product provides a non-greasy and fragrance-free formula for all skin types that applies completely sheer in a matte finish that feels great on your skin.
Shedding Light on Sun Exposure
Protection from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays is important all year round, not just during the summer or at the beach. UVA and UVB rays can cause the following damage:

  • Sunburn
  • Brown spots (sun spots)
  • Faster skin aging
  • Increased skin cancer risk

  • Penetrates skin more deeply than UVB
  • Plays a major role in accelerating photoaging: wrinkles, skin roughening, blotchy skin color, brown spots, poor skin tone, sallowness
  • Can contribute to development of skin cancer

  • Penetrates skin less deeply than UVA
  • Is primary cause of sunburn
  • Plays a key role in the development of skin cancer
  • Contributes to photo- aging

If you need help with minimizing the appearance of premature skin aging, skin damage, hyperpigmentation, acne, or sun damaged skin please speak to us about our Obagi Medical range. Just call into our clinic or call us on 01926 859988.

Get those lips more kissable for Christmas!

lip fillerLip fillers have been on the receiving end of bad press in recent years as we celebrities and others taking things to an extreme.

At Bank Aesthetics, we believe less is more and that the goal with any aesthetics treatment is to achieve a natural look.

A filler treatment to the lip area is the perfect way to enhance your lips in a subtle way, and can help with reducing the signs of ageing around the mouth and chin areas. As we get older lips can appear thinner and a filler treatment will add fullness back again.

Lip fillers can also be used to ease any drooping around the corners of your mouth and smooth any vertical lines and wrinkles that may be starting to appear around the lip area. They also help reduce lines between the lip corners and the chin.

As well as helping with the signs of ageing, we see many clients who have other reasons for wanting to enhance their lip shape. They would like to see a fuller shape to their lips, or adjust the proportions of top and bottom lip or possibly even add definition to lip edges.

Sometimes an application of Botox may be needed to relax the muscles around the mouth area to improve the appearance of static lines.

If you would like to talk to is more detail about how a lip filler treatment can benefit you, please call us today on 01926 859988 to book a free consultation.

Also, not many people realise that another benefit of filler treatments is its moisturising qualities.  Many moisturises contain hyaluronic acid but facial fillers replenish the hyaluronic acid deep within the skin, providing a deep moisturising treatment to your skin.

Whatever your reason a lip filler treatment, get in touch today and get those lips more kissable for Christmas!

Bank Aesthetics offers a range of services for both men and women to help you prepare for the Christmas party season, please give us a call today on 01926 859988 to book your  free consultation.

Clinic Marks First Year Anniversary with £1000 Charity Donation

Molly Ollys PresentationWhen Maria Phillips opened her clinic Beautifil Aesthetics (now Bank Aesthetics) in High Street Kenilworth back in November 2013, she set herself a goal of using the business to support a local children’s charity. After carrying out some research on local organisations, Maria came across Molly Olly’s Wishes and was immediately inspired to help. Over the past 6 months Maria has raised £1000 for the charity through various means including a raffle and Ladies Night event.

Molly Olly’s Wishes was founded by the Ollerenshaws, a local family who tragically lost their daughter Molly to cancer is 2011. The charity’s mission is to offer emotional and financial support where appropriate to the lives of children with terminal or life threatening illnesses through the UK and to advise and assist their families. They have now launched a soft toy called Olly the Brave Olly designed by the charity to support children needing a Central / Hickman Line (These lines reduce the number of needles that children need to have as medicine is fed through them intravenously and bloods samples can be taken. Children have the lines for long periods of time whilst undergoing treatment and he aim of Olly the Brave is to normalize the line for children and help them to come to terms with them.)

Maria explains why she felt drawn to support Molly Olly’s Wishes, “I have 4 children, one of whom I nursed through a serious illness, but I can’t even begin to imagine the pain and suffering these children and families endure when faced with such serious illnesses”

Maria continues “After meeting Rachel, founder of the charity and Molly’s mum, and learning more about the amazing work the charity does, I was immediately inspired to do what I could to support them.”

Rachel Ollerenshaw added “We rely on support from businesses like Maria’s and can’t emphasise enough how vital this source of funds to our charity. Maria’s donation will be used to pay for Olly the Brave toys which we send out to children free of charge. We are also developing a book to help children and parents come to terms with the often invasive treatments needed when a child is seriously ill”

Are you looking for a fresher more youthful look to your skin?

Pumpkin Peel from Beautifil AestheticsThe thought of a chemical peel may be a little daunting, but in recent years technology has come a long way and here at Bank Aesthetics our pumpkin peel – is a much gentler option. This peel is very popular with our clients because the results can be seen almost immediately. You may not be aware of this but the facial peel is something that the ancient Egyptians and Greeks did to give them younger looking skin. The pumpkin peel can help you reduce the appearance of fine lines, soften any acne scarring and deal with issues such as uneven pigmentation.  If you are just looking for a fresher look to your skin then the pumpkin peel would be perfect for you.

You may also hear the pumpkin peel referred to as a pigmentation peel. This is actually an advanced skin treatment and is considered to be ideal for those who have issues with discolouration of the skin. The peel uses a combination of pumpkin pulp and acids to create the effect needed. Pigmentation issues are not the only thing that the pumpkin peel can deal with; fine lines will appear softer and scarring will be reduced.

This type of peel could also be of benefit to those who are suffering from acne and it can also help the skin to balance its hydration levels. Following the treatment the skin may be red for a few days but this will subside and you will soon notice the younger and fresher skin that you were hoping for.

How would I benefit from a Pumpkin Peel?

When considering the pumpkin peel, our team of professionals are on hand to advise you about what is involved and they are happy to answer any questions that you may have. The basic function of a peel is to remove the dead skin cells which tend to sit on the outer layer of the skin. If you were to leave these dead skin cells where they are, they would prevent the skin from using oxygen properly, trap old sebum within the skin and prevent the skin from absorbing the skin products you use.

The pumpkin peel can be used as a stand-alone treatment but you can consider other treatments at the same time. With a whole range of anti-ageing options available, why not talk to one of our practitioners at Bank Aesthetics about how to maximise the results of your treatment?

There are many different types of peels available and our practitioners will discuss the options with you at your initial FREE consultation. The pumpkin peel is a popular choice with many clients and you may need a course of treatments, depending upon the type of problem you are trying to eliminate. Our team of experts will explain the process of the peel to you and help you determine if it is the right course of action for you.

How long will my Botox treatment last – Setting expectations

One question we are asked by a lot of our new clients is, “How long will my Botox treatment last?”, and it is difficult for us to give an exact answer as it varies from person to person.

The aesthetic effects of Botox last for an average of 3-4 months but will vary depending on the condition of the skin, area treated, amount of product injected, injection technique and lifestyle factors such as sun exposure and smoking.

As we get older our skin changes and changes such as; loss of elasticity, thinning and muscle atrophy can have an effect on how long your aesthetics treatment will last.

We take pride in ensuring our clients look natural after treatments and so we would not recommend over treating an area with Botox in order to lengthen the time the effects will last.

There are things you can do to maintain the effects of your aesthetics treatment for as long as possible. Sun damage and smoking for example can have a negative impact and we would recommend you keep out of the sun or use a high factor sunscreen. We all know smoking is bad for us, so if you want to keep your skin looking as young as possible, we recommend that you quit!

We offer all our clients a free initial consultation and so if you are considering Botox and  have any questions about how effective the treatment will be for you, please call us on 01926 859988.

7 Quick Fixes To Help You Prepare For The Christmas Party Season

1. If you want to give your skin a youthful glow, don’t waste time (or money) on products that claim to rejuvenate the Christmas Partyskin. Invest in some basic Cosmeceuticals that are evidence-based and proven to work, such as Obagi.

2. Use a silk pillow to prevent sleep lines. The silk slides on the skin where as a cotton pillowcase drags and folds the skin into creases.

3. Rather than wake up to false eyelashes on the pillow, take a look at products like Revitalash for naturally looking fuller eyelashes.

4. Try a mild chemical facial peel to give your skin that kick start boost.

5. For tired lines, consider some muscle relaxing injections. The results can be quite dramatic, especially if time is an issue. These injections are also excellent for reducing the signs of ageing.
6. For your party nights out, consider a mineral make-up such as Youngblood as it’s much healthier on the skin and its natural mineral compound contains crystals which reflect light to help smooth the appearance of fine lines and blemishes.

7. If you want to cut down the time you spend on doing your make-up, you could consider semi-permanent make-up. Then your eyes and lips are always prepared for a party!

Before you decide on what’s best thing for you, book a consultation with a local reputable skin health clinic, such as Bank Aesthetics. We offer all our clients a FREE INITIAL SKIN HEALTH CONSULTATION.   Speak to a skin care specialist at Bank Aesthetics today on 01926 01926 859988.
